talk about culture shock . . .

    (Dominic)

Brian has written his notes on our arrival to the Philippines. And I’d like to make some comments from my point of view.

Firstly, the plane flight was a nightmare. The seats are too upright and we couldn’t sleep at all.As a matter of fact, I was so hyped-up I didn’t sleep more than a few hours during a 3-day stretch in Angeles City and Baguio.

From the first day in the hotel in Baguio City to the last ( 3 nights), my emotions went from “what the heck are we doing here,” and then a couple of hours later to, “this is incredible, just an incredible experience.”

Brian was steady-as-she-goes while I was all over the place, emotionally.Brian wanted me to shut up while I kept talking non-stop and at nearly an auctioneer’s pace. I couldn’t stop talking.

    Angeles City to Baguio City

On Wednesday, March 5, we had hoped to sleep late -even to 11 a.m. to catch-up ‘lost’ sleep and to begin to reset our circadian rhythms to Philippine time.  However, at 7:05 Dominic and I and my camera bag were wedged into a covered motorcycle sidecar, bouncing on a rutted, pot-holed road at 40 mph, exhaust fumes and soot in our faces, following two other motorcycles with sidecars bearing six pieces of heavy luggage toward the local Mabalacat bus depot. »→

    arrival in the Philippines

    Mabuhay!

We flew from Panama City soon after 6 a.m. on Monday, March 3 and arrived in Manila on Tuesday, March 4, at 10:40 p.m. local time, (8:40 a.m. Tuesday in Panama City).  Dominic hadn’t gone to bed in a friend’s home on Sunday night/Monday morning. And I had awakened in my parents’ home at 2:40 a.m., sneezing with a pet allergy, and I couldn’t fall asleep before arising at 4:00.  We had to go to the Panama City airport by 5:00.
