fun in the sun

I walked down to Baguio Gold to see the family and take the girls back uphill so that we could get a jeepney ride to Baguio City. On Thursday, the sisters had expressed in riding tricycles in Burnham Park, so I said that I’d take them today.

I went down to the shack, asked Mack if he’s been doing his homework and a craft project, then his sisters, Rose and Charlotte, hiked with me up to Monterrazas Village.

Some days we briefly rest when trekking uphill toward civilization

Are you, okay, kuya?

I don’t know …

One of the girls wanted to see Dominic (or perhaps cartoons), and I thought that we could refresh ourselves with milk, juice or water before we go to the jeepney stop. Unfortunately, Dominic had fled the coop, so we drank apple juice then walked up to Tuding Road.

Six loaded jeepneys passed us before we got a ride. Most people want to go into the big city on Saturdays and Sundays.

The girls rode rented tricycles on a lane in Burnham Park for about 30 minutes before Rose tired of that. Then the girls and I went to look for a cheap boat to rent for an hour. Some boats can be had for an unlimited time for the fixed price, but an hour would be enough for us. I’d be the only one rowing.

In fact, I got two blisters by rowing because we wanted to go fast at times. I was the fastest punter on the pea-green, man-mad pond when I rowed the length of it vigorously. So many people pointed at us and watched us in an hour because we traveled faster than anyone else and I’m a white guy with two little Filipinas.

We slowed at times to take in the scene, looking at other boaters and the alternating sunny and overcast autumn sky. We got ice cream from the Nestlé vendor in a blue boat who paddles around all day. And when we drifted, buying and eating ice cream, Filipinas asked if those were my children.

A good time was had by all. We made our way back to the dock for a soft landing, disembarked, then toured around the lake on foot for a while. We hiked past Melvin Jones field and uphill to the east side of Session Road to eat lunch in my favorite restaurant, Vizco’s.

Afterward, we journeyed back to Monterrazas Village, and the girls again hoped to see “Mr. Dominic.” But, alas, he hadn’t returned yet. So the kids walked to home after drinking juice.
