    wondering

If we refer to an enlisted guy in our air force as an airman,

should we refer to an enlisted guy in our navy as a waterman

and an enlisted guy in our army as a landman?

    unbelievable

I just watched on television the Grand-Am race at Virginia International Raceway.  You know the adage, “yellows breed yellows?”  That was true in this afternoon’s race.  I saw a huge gaffe by the race starter flagman when it was time to resume green-flag racing late in the race.  The starter was apparently sleeping in the flag stand overlooking the front straight.  Though the field of cars was on the front straight, and the leader, Scott Pruett, accelerated toward the start line, the flagger neglected to wave a green flag until racers had begun crashing behind Pruett on the straightaway!  What the heck?!  The video replays amazed me.   Quite obviously racers were decelerating, cars were smashing, car parts were airborne, and Pruett was passing the flag stand before the flagger waved his green flag.  Why did (s)he wait until the leader was crossing the start line and racers behind him were crashing and body parts were fluttering skyward?  Unbelievable … so another yellow flag (caution) period ensued as car parts were cleared from the race track …

    “The U.S. must restrict immigration”

an essay I wrote this morning for an F.S.U. class:

I assert that the United States must restrict immigration to law-abiding, productive members of other nations who have verifiable reasons to request entry.  Though I have had a soft heart for impoverished refugees from Haiti, Cuba, and Vietnam, and migrant farm-workers from Mexico, I want to see borders keeping out felonious immigrants.  I have learned in the past several years that tens of thousands of criminals in Mexico (and nations south of it) attempt to illegally cross our southern border because they have no hope of gaining visas.  I had previously assumed that (all) those who attempt perilous border crossings in the desert were desperately poor (yet moral, law-abiding) peasants who wished to work in the U.S. »→
