I just watched on television the Grand-Am race at Virginia International Raceway. You know the adage, “yellows breed yellows?” That was true in this afternoon’s race. I saw a huge gaffe by the race starter flagman when it was time to resume green-flag racing late in the race. The starter was apparently sleeping in the flag stand overlooking the front straight. Though the field of cars was on the front straight, and the leader, Scott Pruett, accelerated toward the start line, the flagger neglected to wave a green flag until racers had begun crashing behind Pruett on the straightaway! What the heck?! The video replays amazed me. Quite obviously racers were decelerating, cars were smashing, car parts were airborne, and Pruett was passing the flag stand before the flagger waved his green flag. Why did (s)he wait until the leader was crossing the start line and racers behind him were crashing and body parts were fluttering skyward? Unbelievable … so another yellow flag (caution) period ensued as car parts were cleared from the race track …
